The Sovabazar Rajbari is an 18th-century royal palace located in North Kolkata, West Bengal. Built by Raja Nabakrishna Deb in the mid-1700s, it served as a focal point for the cultural, social, and political life of Bengal during the British colonial era. It is globally renowned for initiating the traditional, grand-scale celebration of Durga Puja in 1757, a practice that transformed the festival into the massive public and cultural phenomenon it is today.
